Lift Every Voice Memorials

Welcome to African American Funeral Homes.com. This web site contains a directory African American funeral homes in the United States. The funeral homes listed on this web site are African American owned funeral homess  or serve a majority Black/African American clientele. The funeral homes listed are selected by visiting their websites and exploring pages such as the About Us, Staff, History and Obituary pages.

All over the internet and in print we can find stories of churches and funeral homes being among the "last bastions of segregation in the United States" and how both white and black funeral home establishments all over America are frustrated by the difficulty of overcoming this particular "issue". A little bit of investigation will reveal that the bulk (almost all) of this is pushed by white-owned media using terms like "Breaking down racial barriers in the funeral industry". While there are a few black owned funeral homes going along voluntarily with this rhetoric, most do not.

Interestingly, if you were to go to the websites of black owned funeral homes who openly espouse their multi-culturalism you will find very few obituaries for clients who are not African-American
.

There is nothing wrong with African Americans using the services of a white-owned funeral establishments that offer their services to all people with respect, dignity and compassion. However going back to a period of time starting in the 1970s a full scale effort was launched by White funeral establishments and even more so, White/European corporations to buy Black funeral homes. This effort was driven largely by the higher profit margins realized by black funeral homes where there is a much lower acceptance of cremation (which tend to yield lower profit margins than burials). As more and more white Americans began to choose cremation over burial, it resulted in lower profit margins for white funeral establishments. Today there are many cremation services offering cremation for less than one thousand dollars while the cost of even a simple burial runs into the several thousands of dollars and the average cost approaching ten thousand dollars. For a funeral home the profit margin of just a casket alone often exceeds the total cost to the family to cremate the remains of a loved one.

To begin your search, click on a state name below. You will be taken to the directory page for that state. On the state directory page you'll find a directory of cities. Click on a city name to receive a directory of African American / Black funeral homes contained in our directory for that city.

While our directory is somewhat extensive it is by no means all inclusive and we are constantly working to expand it's contents. Much of the coming expansion will consist of adding additional locations for funeral homes already included in the directory as a significant number of the funeral homes currently listed do have multiple locations.
